There have been markets in Leipzig since 1165, when the city and market rights were granted to the town. When the resulting exchange of goods, which mainly took place with the Slavic areas, developed rapidly, the city was granted the privilege of holding fairs by Emperor Maximilian I in 1497. As early as the late Middle Ages, the inhabitants of the town at the confluence of the Weißer Elster, Pleiße and Parthe rivers were forced to provide accommodation and guest rooms in order to offer bed and board to traders and visitors to Leipzig who were interested in buying. Leipzig's development into the most important trade fair location in Germany, next to Frankfurt, was accompanied by a real building boom, which is still evident today in St Thomas' Church, the later place of work of Johann Sebastian Bach. In the typical Leipzig arrangement of residential and commercial buildings, these were usually connected by a passageway courtyard. The Barthels Hof, built in 1523, is regarded as the oldest evidence of this. This building tradition found its continuation in the famous passages, the most famous of which is the Mädlerpassage, which is used as an exquisite shopping street. Other buildings worth seeing in Leipzig include the 16th century Old Town Hall, the Old Weigh House and the Moritz Bastion. Among the city's cultural institutions, the numerous museums, such as the Fine Arts Museum, the Grasssimuseum or the Panometer, which presents the largest panorama paintings in the world, stand out. A further cultural focus, besides numerous cabarets, is the city's musical life, which can be enjoyed almost daily in the New Gewandhaus and the Leipzig Opera House.
